I know that can sound a bit odd when you first read this, how to shop without regretting what you buy. Well then why shop in the first place right?! But it’s happened to me so many times in the past, even the best of us shoppers can make a wrong move. So I wanted to share my advice on how to shop without having any regrets. This will also be helpful for those of you who don’t have a strategy when you’re shopping to begin with so it can help guide you next time you venture out.
Shop With An Idea Of What You Want
The first thing I always say is when you’re going shopping make sure you know what you want. I know retail therapy can be a serious fix when you’re having a bad day. However, even on those days before you go in and start browsing make sure you decide what you’d wanna get for yourself. Whether it’s a new accessory you’ve been pining over such as a bag or jewelry or a great new dress, I always say go in with something in mind. When you start shopping just to shop this is where you might run into some trouble. Don’t get me wrong I’ve found some of my best pieces by chance! But that doesn’t always happen and more often than not I end up with something that goes in the back of my closet and just stays there.
Don’t Forget About Comfort!
Comfort is everything! If you’re already in the fitting room and you’re not comfortable in what you have on, don’t get it! There are too many things that can go wrong with an outfit that’s just not sitting well. If you need tape, belts and the whole nine just to hold it together then it’s so not worth it. You can find what you’re looking for in that style without all the hassle. You’ll end up fidgeting all day or night with it on and it will make you look uncomfortable. Confidence is key with any look and if you’re uncomfortable, I promise you it shows.
Choose The Right Color For You
Knowing what colors work for you seems a lot easier than it actually is. I know you think, well if I like it in the fitting room then why not right?! But then you step outside in sunlight and it’s a whole other story. You need to remember that lightening in fitting rooms for most stores is done in a way to make sure you look flattering. They want you to walk out buying something after all!
It’s like that episode on Seinfeld, Elaine purchases a dress that looks amazing in the store but then comes home and it looks horrible. Stores will make sure that not only the lighting but the mirrors are also angled in a way to elongate you.
Whatever they can do to make sure you walk out with a purchase, they’ll do it. But we know better than that and keep those things in mind when we shop. For example, no matter the shade or how good it looks in the fitting room, beige does not go well with my skin tone. The lighting in the store can make it look great on me but the moment I step outside it does not compliment me in natural light.
This is why whenever I find a top that I love in store, I try to see if it comes in another color. Again this is all about not regretting what you end up with so it may seem like a lot to handle but believe me it becomes second nature in time.
Smart Shop
Now the last thing I want to talk about is knowing what will compliment what’s already in your wardrobe. Before you say to yourself,
“Is this girl crazy?! How am I gonna remember everything in my closet?!”
You don’t need to remember every item you own! You just have to know the general idea of what’s already going on in there. Side note, this is why I love having my closet super organized so I can see everything that’s going on the second I open it. Don’t worry if you’re thinking,
“Well my closet isn’t organized and I have no clue where to start!”
I got you, there will be a post about this coming very soon I promise!
When you go shopping and you know you already have lots of whites and blues for example in your closet, those are your go to colors. Try adding something red in the mix. This will compliment what you already have, you know you’ll be able to mix in match with what’s in there and you’ll end up wearing it over and over again. See, no regrets happening here. So now, let’s say you have a lot of prints in your closet, you love all types of prints and colors but it’s really hard to mix and match. I’d say go for some basic solid colors, this way you can add them to everything that’s already in there. Black and white goes with everything so if you purchase some key staple pieces, it will compliment everything you already have.
Here are some of my favorite staple pieces from Urban Outfitters that are super affordable and can really go with anything that is in your closet right now.
